PCI NEWS: Demand immediate exam of backlog subjects

The 8th semester B-tech students of SSM College Parihaspora, Pattan accused the Kashmir University (KU) authorities of delaying their engineering degree by not holding exam for the backlog 5th and 6th semester subjects.

The students enrolled in 2014 should in normal course have completed their degree by 2018 end.

A group of students told Greater Kashmir that the delay in holding the exam for the backlog subjects of 5th and 6th semester by KU was delaying the completion of their degree.

“Due to this delay, our degree will be stretched to five years. KU should not consume five years for a four year course,” said Naveed an engineering student from SSM College.

The students said every student is given at least one chance to appear in the exam of the backlog subjects with their juniors “but the 2014 batch students were denied this opportunity.”

“As per the rules we should be given a chance to appear in the exams of the backlog subjects before completing our degree. KU authorities are deliberately creating hurdles for us and have deprived us a chance to appear in backlog exams,” the students said.

The engineering students recently held a peaceful protest in the Srinagar press enclave to press for their demand.

A group of students visited Greater Kashmir and complained against the “indifferent” attitude of the officials concerned at the Kashmir University.

“We approached the officials in examination department of the KU but they didn’t pay any heed to our issue,” the students said.

“Our 8th semester exam was recently conducted and we demand that in the meantime, the KU should hold exam of our 5th and 6th semester backlog subjects so that our degree gets completed without loss of time,” the students said.

Controller examination KU, Prof Farooq Ahmad Mir said they will hold a “special exam” for these students and date sheet will be notified within a week’s time.

“There is no provision for holding supplementary exam for the SSM 5th and 6th semester students but this batch was not given an opportunity to appear in the exams of backlog subjects, which makes their case strong,” the controller examination admitted.

He said they have decided to hold a special exam for the students in relaxation of rules. “We have prepared a note which will be submitted to the Vice Chancellor for approval,” he said.
