Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap made it to the quarterfinals of the French Open Super Series with straight game victories in Paris on Thursday.

While Saina defeated Kristy Gilmour of Scotland 21-19, 21-16, Kashyap accounted for another top-ranked opponent, World No. 9 Houwei Tian of China 21-19, 21-18. However, top-ranked Indian in men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth made another quick exit losing to Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark 2022, 14-21.

Indo-Russian mixed double duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and Vladimir Ivanov won the second game but failed to stop seventh-seeded Chinese pair of Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong 21-8, 18-21, 21-9. Ashwini and Ivanov may have lost the contest, but the fact that they cleared the first round and took a game against tough opponents indicates that the new combination is on the right track.

Meanwhile, Saina, who improved her rank to World No. 6 after a long gap, broke little sweat in her second round tie against Kirsty. Though the scoreline indicates a close contest, Saina was in total control throughout the match. From 7-7 in the first game, Saina broke free and was always in the lead. This is Saina’s fourth victory against Kirsty. She will now face the winner of the match between second seed Shixian Wang and Sayaka Takahashi of Japan. Saina lost to Shixian in the Denmark Open quarterfinals.
