Resident doctors protest against govt decision

Patient services at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) were hit today as resident doctors of the institute went on a strike against government decision of attaching director and suspension of senior doctors of the institute, triggering protests from patients who faced difficulties in availing the services.

On Tuesday, resident doctors of SKIMS remained off from their work stations at the hospital, affecting delivery of services in OPD, wards and other areas of the hospital. The strike had been called by resident doctors association (RDA) of SKIMS in protest of attachment of director SKIMS taken by government on Saturday.

The strike that was announced on Monday will continue for two hours every day, a handout of RDA SKIMS said. “If director SKIMs is not reinstated, then strike will continue everyday for two hours from 10 am to 12 pm,” the handout said. Emergencies, oncology day care and ICU services have been exempted from the strike.

Long queues of patients were seen in OPDs and other areas of the hospital and patients complained they had to wait for hours. Later, patients and attendants held a protest demonstration at the entrance of the hospital, shouting slogans against SKIMS administration, government and private practice.

Later, a meeting of all heads of departments of SKIMS was held to ensure participation of resident doctors in patient care activities. A committee was also constituted to start a dialogue process with the doctors on strike.
