PCI NEWS: Slippery walkways irk commuters

Despite passing of three days since the summer capital received heavy snowfall, authorities are yet to clear snow mounds and undertake dewatering in city centre areas here.

In absence of snow clearance on footpaths, Flea market at Residency Road, which witnesses a huge rush of shoppers on Sunday, was in a shabby state. Shoppers faced inconvenience as they had to walk on snow mounds on footpaths and inundated road.

Many vendors said that they had to clear snow to setup stalls. “Instead of attending to costumers, i am clearing snow mounds from footpaths to pave way for customers to my stall,” said Altaf Ahmed, a vendor.

“Keeping in view heavy rush on Sunday, administration should have cleared the snow at least from paths where we set up our stalls,” he said.

Shoppers said that slippery footpaths posed threat of injuries to them. “We walked on footpath by holding each other. This signifies callous approach of the authorities in removing accumulated snow” said Shafat Ahmed, a shopper.

“Our business our affected due to waterlogged road and slippery paths,” said a vendor at Regal Chowk

Thousands of vendors sell everyday items from household goods to winter wear in the flea market which stretches from Radio Kashmir to Hari Singh High Street (HSHS).

Chief sanitation officer SMC said “we will press our men into service on Monday to clear snow mounds and undertake dewatering.”
